Mommy and Son Session

September 28, 2025

The other night, I had the great pleaser of photographing and mother and son. The air was humid, the bugs were out, and the daylight was quickly fleeting. So we had to work fast. This was a very quick session for me I typically try and make them 30 mins to an hour, but we still were able to get many great shots. One thing I am coming to learn in portrait photography is knowing how to time golden hour just right. Earlier in the week last week, I had set a time for the session based off of the lighting that night. I should have taken into consideration the days are getting shorter, not every night is going to be the same as before. I almost wish I had planned for a few minuets earlier, as the lighting more then likely would have been almost perfect. But as most photographers do, we rolled with what we had.

This mama and son were an absolute joy to work with! While our time was short, we made the most of it. The boy was a typical boy, and a kid at most! His silly little faces, his small attention span and his love for his mama all had me so happy and smiling ear to ear that night. The mama was very sweet and very soft spoken. We both had ideas that we had saved in a board on Pinterest, so we rolled with some of my poses, and she even whipped out some poses of her own, which I absolutely loved and appreciated!

One thing I hope people understand about me in my photography career, is the fact that I am self taught. I did not attend any school, except for a few classes here and there. Everything I have learned, has been on the fly, or from articles on Pinterest. I am very proud of how far I came, but I know I still have so far to go. This session was one of the sessions where the photos looked one way on my camera, but another way on the big screen. I was actually able to learn more tips and tricks while editing, that I will absolutely be using in future sessions. Like I said before, light unfortunately was not on my side that night, and it really reflected onto the photos which just crushed me. Being self-taught, I obviously strive to be the best I can be, while also knowing I am perfect. I hope this mama love her photos, and I hope she appreciates the work I put into these to ensure I gave her the best quality I could.
